Leopard’s View

Leopard’s View is one of those places you visit and then think “Can we just live here forever?” Owners Neil and Ann are wonderful hosts, and Iris and Lucia seamlessly take care of guests’ needs in the lodge’s three chalets. After staying here for just three days last year, we consider Neil and Ann dear friends (although not sure if they want to adopt us. Yet).

Leopard’s View is part of the Oliphants West Game Reserve, within Balule Game Reserve, which is unfenced and borders Kruger National Park. That means the animals are free to go where they want. For example, the lion that wanted a drink from Ann’s bird-bath at their house. The reserve is also home to the all-female Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit.

Today would have consisted of two game drives – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. This is the typical safari schedule. Wake up at first light; a quick little breakfast; three-ish-hour game drive; return to lodge for big brunch/lunch; nap or shower during the heat of the day; high tea (coffee, tea, cookies, cake); then back out for the evening game drive until dark; return to the lodge for an amazing dinner and campfire; go to bed; repeat. And if you are Steph, keep repeating.

We’d hope to again see lions, the huge collared bull elephant, and the hyenas that were not at their den last year.

Balule Game Reserve, South Africa, 2019. Male lion (not the most handsome chap). Be sure to turn up your volume.

From your wonderful description of people and places (isn’t Leopards View a lovely name), I feel weary from the journey but elated and excited to be there. Glad to see you have maintained a sense of humour and fun! Photos are a nice addition, especially the lion cubs. Can we buy a cuddly toy to bring home?
